Have you ever wished you could live like royalty? Maybe you just got done with binge watching Game of Thrones and now you are infatuated with the idea of living in a castle. The bad news is that odds are you probably won’t ever own a castle. The good news is that there are a ton of castles that don’t cost much more than an average hotel room which you can rent using AirBnB. The Brandsmen also have a bit of an obsession with castles and while we have yet to rent one of these ourselves (don’t worry we will report back when we do) we’ve come up with a list of reasonably priced castles to rent.
Location: Cumbria, United Kingdom
Price: $214 per night
This 1841 castle is worth visiting with a car because it’s right next to the Yorkshire Dales and is about an hour from the Lake District. It looks like a castle should, but there are multiple rooms rented out to different guests. If you want to show off like a real royal, rent the whole castle and throw a party for your friends!
Castrum of Serravalle
Location: Veneto, Italy
Price: $180 per night
If you want to feel like an old-fashioned ruler of Italy, then stay in this treasure tucked away in Serraville. It’s not touristy, so you won’t have to deal with massive crowds, but it’s a good home base to visit the Adriatic Coast and many nice little towns. Guests of the castle have access to two bedrooms and a private park.
Chateau de Barnay
Location: Burgundy, France
Price: $140 per night
The owners live on the ground floor of this castle, but you can rent the whole level above them for your own private use. You enter through a spiral staircase, and inside you’ll see French ceilings and fireplaces that have the seal of the Templars carved in them. If that won’t make your friends jealous, nothing will.
Location: Scotland, United Kingdom
Price: $110 per night
This Scottish castle is great for those of you who really want to live like a jet setter because it’s about 10 minutes from the Edinburgh airport. But, don’t worry that it’s a modern place. It was remodeled in the 1850s, but it was a popular spot for the Scottish Kings to rest their feet after hunting trips in the 15th and 16th centuries. Times may have changed, but you’ll forget all about that while taking a nice walk through the nature surrounding your fortified home.
Location: Midlothian, United Kingdom
You won’t get this whole place to yourself, but sharing a castle with some other guests is a small price to pay for spending your nights in the former hunting seat of Mary Queen of Scots. Plus, it takes about 20 minutes to drive to the modern city of Edinburgh, so you’re close to a city if you get tired of living in the past.
Location: Galway, Ireland
Price: $145 per night
This Irish castle has been standing for over 600 years. But even though it was built in the 1400s, there have been a lot of renovations over the past few years. That being said, it’s a real Irish castle, and it has the challenges that come with that. There are winding staircases, and the rooms weren’t designed for running water (so it’s a bit of a walk to the bathroom).
It’s about a half an hour drive to Galway City, so you’ll be experiencing real life in the wilds of Ireland. Plus, you’ll be spending your nights in a family-owned castle, and your chambers in the tower will let you survey the land from your private view.
Location: Aberdeenshire, United Kingdom
Price: $115 per night
If you want to feel a direct connection to the past, then you should spend some time in this castle that dates back to the 13th century. It’s another one that you should bring a car to because of its remote location, but it’s a great place to get away from it all.
Location: Knoxville, TN, United States
Price: $437 per night
This may not be the most historic place on our list, but this Tennessee castle was modeled after a place in Scotland. And really, who cares how old it is? It has swords, towers, secret passages, and your own private pub!
